Amid mounting pressure on the global food system, alternative proteins are emerging as more than a food innovation trend. In China, they now sit at the intersection of the country’s food security strategy, ‘dual carbon’ goals, agricultural decarbonization, green finance, and the national drive to develop next-generation industries.
This report analyses China’s alternative protein sector across three pathways – plant-based proteins, cultivated meat, and fermentation-derived proteins – and finds that while technological capabilities are no longer the primary bottleneck, finance is the critical engine for translating promising technologies into commercial reality.
